The Housing Unit Demolition Task Force (HUTF) will also be handling the demolition application of this property for Janee Patin. There is NO public hearing on these aside from the public comment period in the link below. We have submitted public comment to these properties but received no response. If you want a phone call or petition, let us know. Here is the profile of the current owner from the assessor’s database. She also owns the property at 1501 Baronne. She has two different current addresses, one on West End and one in GA. The majority of the damage on this, and the other structure she owns, is due to neglect, not from Katrina.

The Housing Unit Demolition Task Force, an entity of the city attorney’s office, has applied to demolish this Victorian-style single shotgun for the owner, Wilmot Shows, who plans to replace it with a vacant lot. This is a great little house. And Wilmot’s shed in the back is pretty wonderful too.

We have been trying to figure out the role of the HUTF. It seems to be the city entity that is operating as Neighborhood One. Most likely the funds for these demolitions are federal matching funds from FEMA.

Owner First House of Prayer Baptist Church has applied to demolish this raised basement, Art-and-Crafts style double shotgun. It was Freddy and Dorothy’s Restaurant, back in the day.

This neglected responsibility will be replaced by a vacant lot. The rear wall has fallen off. I am shocked at how many properties are left to blight and later demolished by churches. It dawned on me that there must be a house heaven. Angels fix them up and live in them.

This shotgun double is in fair shape. The extension on the back is not as good, it’s sitting lower to the ground. The owners next to this property are renovating. If these folks could perhaps, just demolish the back part and then renovate the front, original part of the home, that would be ideal.

RESULTS=DENIED

1722 Cleveland Oct 20 Rebel 001

The owner sent a representative by the name of Lisa Clark to request demolition of this 1880’s Eastlake (high style Victorian) shotgun which is in fair shape, squatters are living in it. It’s got great exterior detail, like shutters and the terra cotta crown on the roof. Interiors include fireplaces and mantles intact. The side gallery is great. This property could be renovated.

The owner, Henry Herdman, is well known in the Tulane/Gravier neighborhood because he owns many neglected properties and vacant lots. This house has some solid architectural features that should have been nurtured. I have seen this one man destroy a neighborhood’s architectural fabric just because he has refused to sell and the city lacks the teeth to take his neglected properties away. My post on Metroblogging New Orleans tells the story of my very first site visit for SH. At One With Weird

Here is the list of properties this man owns, according to the assessor’s database. Often these folks have more blighted property, hiding some of them under the names of family members. We need some property law enforcement in New Orleans.

RESULTS= WITHDRAWN

1728 Gordon St Lower Ninth

I had to dig some weeds aside on the sidewalk to get at the spray painted address on the sidewalk to verfiy it as the right place. All you can wonder down here in the Lower Ninth Ward, . . . where are these people now? A worker in an orange vest stopped to ask if I was alright, it’s pretty desolate out here. It’s unusual to see a white chick with a camera and clipboard. We must thank the owners for gutting the house, it is the only real way to assess the scope of the damage, and so many of these were ‘no brainers’ for demo, they only have one choice.

Owner Larry Perodin has applied to demolish this arts and crafts style single shotgun. He has no plan to rebuild. I can’t argue it, I can only be sad. My guess is that this will be approved.

This house is in the upper Ninth Ward, between Clouet and Louisa St. The speed tour of our devastated city could be done by driving the length of Louisa St. If you drive from one end of Louisa St. to the other, you will see a cross section of damage that is representative of the scope of the destruction we have on our hands here. At the more Eastern end, near Indian Village, 90% of it looks like it was bombed. There are a surprising amount of people coming back there. Here, above the Bywater neighborhood, it’s better but it’s hard to argue demolition for most of the housing stock. It’s heartbreaking.

When you cross Claiborne things improve greatly and when you cross over St. Claude it feels like nothing ever happened.
