Owner Patricia Brent has applied to demolish this contemporary brick ranch to be replaced with a vacant lot.
You may ask why we are including these entries for the Lower Ninth Ward, for homes lacking architectural significance. I just want to remind readers that we want to do our best to include a cross-section of demolitions as a matter of documentation. For some of the lower-ninth ward owners, these properties remained in the family since emancipation. Brian Denzer, did a great interview with some residents from the lower ninth at a recent planning congress.

The Housing Unit Demolition Task Force, an entity of the city attorney’s office, has applied to demolish this Victorian-style single shotgun for the owner, Wilmot Shows, who plans to replace it with a vacant lot. This is a great little house. And Wilmot’s shed in the back is pretty wonderful too.
We have been trying to figure out the role of the HUTF. It seems to be the city entity that is operating as Neighborhood One. Most likely the funds for these demolitions are federal matching funds from FEMA.

Owner First House of Prayer Baptist Church has applied to demolish this raised basement, Art-and-Crafts style double shotgun. It was Freddy and Dorothy’s Restaurant, back in the day.
This neglected responsibility will be replaced by a vacant lot. The rear wall has fallen off. I am shocked at how many properties are left to blight and later demolished by churches. It dawned on me that there must be a house heaven. Angels fix them up and live in them.

The owner sent a representative by the name of Lisa Clark to request demolition of this 1880’s Eastlake (high style Victorian) shotgun which is in fair shape, squatters are living in it. It’s got great exterior detail, like shutters and the terra cotta crown on the roof. Interiors include fireplaces and mantles intact. The side gallery is great. This property could be renovated.
The owner, Henry Herdman, is well known in the Tulane/Gravier neighborhood because he owns many neglected properties and vacant lots. This house has some solid architectural features that should have been nurtured. I have seen this one man destroy a neighborhood’s architectural fabric just because he has refused to sell and the city lacks the teeth to take his neglected properties away. My post on Metroblogging New Orleans tells the story of my very first site visit for SH. At One With Weird
Here is the list of properties this man owns, according to the assessor’s database. Often these folks have more blighted property, hiding some of them under the names of family members. We need some property law enforcement in New Orleans.
