In contrast to tentative state plans to close approximately 60 of the existing 129 New Orleans school facilities, Jefferson Parish School board President Etta Licciardi went on the record opposing any school closures in Jefferson Parish–despite the fact that several schools are at less than 50% capacity. School closures before residents have an opportunity to return would carry serious political and community implications, according to Licciardi. “We can’t close schools based on today’s enrollment, because it will increase,” Licciardi said.
