Rally Against Unathorized Demolition in the French Quarter

Rally in the Quarter

A Message from Nathan Chapman.

Nathan Chapman and Carol Greve

Thursdays French Quarter Rally, protesting the slashed budget of our vital historic Commissions, specifically, the Vieux Carre Commission and the Historic District Landmarks Commission, was a huge success!

Rally in French Quarter

Citizens, businesses and even the contractor agreed that a better staffed VCC would help everyone.
New Orleans

And that an inspector could have caught and prevented the unauthorized demolition of this historic briquette entre poteaux cottage at 1025 Orleans before it was too late.

With so much riding on the future of the French Quarter, we call upon the city to announce, in conjunction with the one-year anniversary of Katrina, the restoration of at least one inspector for the Vieux Carre Commission. In a time of a profound budget crisis, is this asking too much? No, with so much at stake, it is asking too little.

Thank you to all who attended, despite the heat! A very special THANK YOU to City Councilman James Carter, who left the City Council meeting to come show his support, and former City Councilmember Jackie Clarkson.

Wow. An unauthorized demolition in the French Quarter. How did that happen? How does one sneak a demolition into the historic heart of the city? Why wasn’t this stopped?

It is a construction site, and there is some controvery as to the aggresiveness of the Contractor. He was there at the rally and there was a bit of a dust up, but for the most part people were focussed on the real situation. The fact that City Staff has been cut dramatically, and that it is impossible for inspectors to keep an eye on these job sites

[…] There was a great article in the Sunday edition of the San Antonio newspaper. A few weeks ago Roy Bragg was here and we met up at the rally in the Quarter. […]

FYI, I don’t think that’s Lisa Mazique in the picture you posted. I’ve met her before and she’s taller and thinner and doesn’t look like that

Thanks, someone sent me that photo of Lisa Mazique but you are probably correct. I will post that on the entry.
    Thanks again
